<div style="text-align: center;">
My mom taught me to sew when I was just a kid. I don't think she even realized she was teaching me anything, you see, I learned quite a lot by just watching her. She is a master seamstress. She worked at a children's clothing factory and made a lot of my clothes. When I got older, she would make me Halloween costumes and a few dresses for choir performances. She would be lost in these patterns, just sewing away, while I would (probably annoyingly) ask question after question. What do these marks mean? What about these arrows? The grain goes which way? Wait. What's the "grain" again?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She was SO patient with me and very sweetly answered every single one of my questions, no matter how annoying I must have been or how busy she was with whatever project she was working on. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I learned so much from watching and asking questions, by the time I was a senior in high school and taking a home economics class, I was the one the boys all came to offering to pay ME to finish their sewing projects for a good grade. I didn't do it because I was too busy doing extra projects for extra credit. I was my favorite part of that class.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I got married and had babies, I made curtains and pillows, clothes...I was never much into the "quilting" thing. Not just because it looked hard (it did), but well, you know...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
that was for "grandmas".</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I caught the bug 5 years ago, I just KNEW she would love it, too. She hadn't sewn in a very long time and when we talked about it, she would say, "That seems hard." or "I wish I had time, but I don't."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Well, this past December, she announced that she was ready to make her first quilt and asked me if I could teach her a few basics. I can't begin to describe how excited I was! I couldn't WAIT to go fabric shopping and get her started! The photo above was her first "practice" block. She didn't just wanna do straight seams, squares, triangles...she wanted to do something fun. So she made a Dresden Plate. She started her first quilt on Dec. 18, one week before Christmas. She finished it about 2 weeks later.</div>

She has already finished several more...6 or 7? I don't know, I'm losing count now. She is quilting them herself on my machine and seems to love every step of the quilting process. </div>

<div align="center">
Remember I mentioned 3 snow days? Yeah. I got this top done, too.</div>
<div align="center">
I thought I might keep this one for myself, but I think I've decided this one needs to be a birthday present for a close friend...shhhhhh! Don't tell her! Her birthday isn't until July, so I have some time to get it quilted and bound. I think I'll put it aside for now and work on my first king-sized quilt for my guest bedroom. We will have missionary guests coming at the end of March so wish me luck!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Got the binding on this today...between haircuts. We've had snow and ice the last 3 days and I had enough cancellations today to do some sewing.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I made this quilt top...well, I don't even remember how long ago. 2 years? 3? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I finished it for an auction that our Missions team is having at church on Sunday.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I THINK I used "Happy" by Me and My Sister designs. I do remember that I made it from part of a layer cake. It measures approx. 48x56 and was made with HSTs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWxXXcG_LD1IaOC6oVISXTXg6521PSwSuF2Sd75JPThR9Ud1Tgtg_ftkDde_DaS_s39p3CLchIFbn4_Jonfc2ZHKngtE-c5MhYE6MQjMtwrLAX3xGHOken-W1taEFg0yv5LNVEs2b_nws/s1600/IMG_3528.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWxXXcG_LD1IaOC6oVISXTXg6521PSwSuF2Sd75JPThR9Ud1Tgtg_ftkDde_DaS_s39p3CLchIFbn4_Jonfc2ZHKngtE-c5MhYE6MQjMtwrLAX3xGHOken-W1taEFg0yv5LNVEs2b_nws/s1600/IMG_3528.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used this one to practice some new free-motion designs.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And then while I was putting on the binding, my pretty brand new iron (I hadn't even had time to get adhesive on it yet!) DIED.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, I improvised...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJq7jtI3xWT_0BATOKDO5vG7WQhgvzNQLR840An1_qXdrEiY2lUJszv8LmIpkuHVFoZSxaFGMBlzFdeU0OKcUs4L9fQK3uMfQorIWMfmQDGdcWwLkST5ZT-OSKxjjuw7Hsq9Z5pSs_tB8/s1600/IMG_3548.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJq7jtI3xWT_0BATOKDO5vG7WQhgvzNQLR840An1_qXdrEiY2lUJszv8LmIpkuHVFoZSxaFGMBlzFdeU0OKcUs4L9fQK3uMfQorIWMfmQDGdcWwLkST5ZT-OSKxjjuw7Hsq9Z5pSs_tB8/s1600/IMG_3548.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: center;">
with my flat iron. Luckily, it worked.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Just got this one delivered tonight. Baby boy isn't due for a couple more months, so this is definitely a first for me.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Super soft minky for the back. A fun loopy free-motion quilting design.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used a half of a Pure jelly roll and some neutral tan for background.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The inspiration for this pattern came from <a href="http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/2010/03/hexagon-quilt-along-supplies.html">Jaybird quilts hexagon QAL.</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was really fun to make.</div>

<div align="center">
2 years ago, my sweet husband (who is extremely supportive of my quilting) bought me a Gracie Start-Right frame and a Juki TL98Q.</div>
<div align="center">
I was so nervous to "play" with my new toy so I thought, I'll just use a quilt top that I don't really care that much for and then it won't matter if the quilting is bad, right?</div>
<div align="center">
I just THOUGHT I didn't care for this one. It had been hidden in a closet for, oh I don't know, 2 years or so?</div>
<div align="center">
So I put it on the frame and gave it a go...turns out, quilting was all this baby needed to find new life! I love it! AND I love my Gracie and Juki...of course, I love hubby, too.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was another top that I had tucked away, not because I didn't like it, but because I made it with nobody particular in mind. Then a co-worker had a baby girl. I used <a href="http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2010/02/crazy-ninepatch-lattice-quilt.html">this tutorial</a> for the blocks and it was SUPER fun and SUPER easy to make.</div>

In April 2012, a very close sweet friend turned the big 5-OH and I knew I just HAD to make her a quilt for her birthday. Her favorite color is blue and I found this pretty blue and purple peacock fabric that was just perfect for her. The pattern is called <a href="http://www.frommarti.com/windingways.shtml">Winding Ways</a>. It was my first time to make, quilt, and bind scalloped edges and it was actually pretty fun.</div>

In July, our Pastor and his wife celebrated 20 years of being at <a href="http://www.friendshipowasso.org/">our church</a> and my gift to them was this quilt. Each block has the name of a Sunday School class machine-embroidered in the middle and then I went around to each class to have as many people as possible to sign the blocks.</div>

My sweet mother-in-love is having a birthday on Monday. I made her this. It's the best thing EVER! It's a purse organizer :)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A must-have for any girl who changes purses often and likes to keep things extremely organized. I LOVE mine and I know she'll love it, too. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It has a clear ID window and credit card slots, a zipper pocket for change and a slot for bills/checks, pen loops and lots of pockets for phone, keys...whatever we girls like to carry with us!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I got the pattern from <a href="http://www.studiokatdesigns.com/products/porta-pockets">Studio Kat Designs</a>. They have some of the cutest purses and organizers of all sizes. I have bought several patterns and just love them all!</div>

So, yeah, um...it's only been about 2 1/2 years since my last post. Imagine my surprise when I typed in the address and found that I still HAVE a blog. I have no good excuse. I could say my life is just very busy. Or, you know, I DO work a regular day job. Well, I do. But the truth is, I simply lost my quilty mojo for awhile there. I mean, it was GONE. And I couldn't seem to find it anywhere!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It WAS an eventful year. We had a wedding and a grandchild born last year. Another grown child decided it was time to live on her own and, luckily, only moved about 2 blocks from us, but still...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My mother-in-love moved from Michigan to Ok and lived with us for a few months before getting a place of her own. My father lost his battle with cancer and passed away a week before his 64th birthday.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I DID do SOME sewing through all of that. As I have for the past 3 years, I made a quilt for our Missions Conference at <a href="http://www.friendshipowasso.org/">church</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqHJr0I2_s8VQVq5qo2k7PYh_q4bf7bSpQZ-csDlvVtfFS_ESmySdpDMFftDNfUF9CGyvQVxxXBryVUf8yXBf53ib2QTjjMWWY0HFsn3iRyv8s-C9wKl41f2tdP-a3YYeRupKn8rpY5fw/s1600/IMG_0369.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqHJr0I2_s8VQVq5qo2k7PYh_q4bf7bSpQZ-csDlvVtfFS_ESmySdpDMFftDNfUF9CGyvQVxxXBryVUf8yXBf53ib2QTjjMWWY0HFsn3iRyv8s-C9wKl41f2tdP-a3YYeRupKn8rpY5fw/s1600/IMG_0369.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Also, one of my hair clients asked me to make a t-shirt quilt as a graduation gift for her grand-daughter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span id="goog_100532901"></span><span id="goog_100532902"></span>And remember I said we had a wedding?</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As I have been searching for these quilt pics, I found some 2012 quilts that I made but never posted about...you know, because I'm the worst blogger.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'll try again tomorrow :) </div>

I also made a dust ruffle, and a ruffled pillow for sweet baby Breanna. I've been working on this set for about 3 months now...my "real" job totally cramps my quilty style ;)<br />
Here's the whole thing all put together...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL9r4RsL4Fq9orwkc6u__NL7zbcuZ3KtwlPS4W6PbRY6xKNPDdq7J1kC22rvDAzYtiqSiPgI43NTL_vQUb8Ic0a7mDKnUhP1N2RyCdN8DL_Vj9ZlYxK95k0NcZ85kvBDjsLhWt3DclSE8/s1600/P7181180.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" m$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL9r4RsL4Fq9orwkc6u__NL7zbcuZ3KtwlPS4W6PbRY6xKNPDdq7J1kC22rvDAzYtiqSiPgI43NTL_vQUb8Ic0a7mDKnUhP1N2RyCdN8DL_Vj9ZlYxK95k0NcZ85kvBDjsLhWt3DclSE8/s320/P7181180.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>I wish the crown hadn't turned out so blurry. It really is spectacular! The only things I can take credit for are the dust ruffle, bumper and pillow. Breanna's mom did all the rest. Isn't it beautiful?! <br />

The truth is, I didn't want the friends waiting for those projects to be finished to see everytime I was side-tracked by something else. Please tell me I'm not the only one!<br />
I have 1 quilt top to finish and send to the long-armer for quilting and I will officially be "caught up" on those projects...Yay! I hope that blogging about it will maybe help me to keep this motivation that I'm feeling right now. I will keep going and make my goal to finish that top TOMORROW!DD Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01331864126233676716noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8890641857899045780.post-82939622961827102242011-07-07T17:53:00.001-05:002011-07-07T23:09:42.276-05:00Quilt for Missions<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzXNSuK9on6HOXZdzMachvYNncaxdqTN4p7sKIgOHpVw8Yb8W6lBu8LIwpN-dH_0xINOXgrd2pDqb-R5aLOKy-QwUPquNeKJ9acVvQWjoPIQhCy1CiHWsECEi-vOQ3x9KSRBon4lIguU4/s1600/P2051137.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" h5="true" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzXNSuK9on6HOXZdzMachvYNncaxdqTN4p7sKIgOHpVw8Yb8W6lBu8LIwpN-dH_0xINOXgrd2pDqb-R5aLOKy-QwUPquNeKJ9acVvQWjoPIQhCy1CiHWsECEi-vOQ3x9KSRBon4lIguU4/s320/P2051137.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>Finished up the quilting on this one today. I've posted before about my <a href="http://www.flynnquilt.com/">Flynn Frame</a>, but today I had hubby shoot a short video actually showing how I do it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxEg2IaRIorFYIgOZFbvEtVyjSXvrhnDzXgGk8zuUtPVYHTJktIzYkVetYL-pBPrZNDqy46tgDedUWbG0WNYw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br />
It was taken with my phone so the quality's not the best, but trust me, I've been snowed-in all week (originally posted in Feb) and have also taken the week off from make-up. You don't wanna see me in HD right now. I had already quilted as far across the quilt as I could with the throat space I have on my machine. So in this shot you can see that I have removed the middle rod and turned the frame around to continue quilting down the rest of the quilt.DD Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01331864126233676716noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8890641857899045780.post-30050987499792051722011-02-04T19:37:00.000-06:002011-02-04T19:37:10.523-06:00Cabin feverThe guys ventured out today, but not for a good or fun reason...<br />

Her name is Haley and you can read more about her story <a href="http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/haleypalmer">here</a>. In May of 2009, I made <a href="http://sewmuchbeauty.blogspot.com/2010/05/some-finished-quilts.html">my first memory quilt</a>. It was for my daughter as a graduation gift. I posted pics of it on Facebook and was contacted by Haley's mama (who I went to high school with). She still had all of Haley's clothes and thought it would be cool to have a quilt made from them.<br />

I was still very new to quilting, but these were fun to make and I was looking forward to making another one for Haley's mama. I thought it didn't seem fair that she wouldn't get to keep these first 2 quilts, so I thought it might be cool for them (mostly for Haley's little sis) to have something they could cuddle with until the 3rd quilt was made. So, using one of Haley's sweatshirts, <br />

This time, I wanted to make it the traditional way...you know, make a top, then layer and quilt it as one big quilt. We were going for a large lap size to maybe a twin. I had finally figured out how to install longer rods on my Flynn frame and THOUGHT I wanted to try and quilt it myself. Here it is all loaded on the frame and ready to go...<br />

I thought I had practiced enough on other quilts, but apparently not. It was not good. It took me about 5 days and I can't tell you how many hours to un-pick all those stitches. So I called my friend Christie and begged for her help. She let me bring it over and also let me help her load it onto her long-arm frame so that she could quilt it the way it was meant to be quilted. And I am SO glad she did! It turned out beautiful and was finished just in time to be included in their Christmas holiday...a whole year after the first 2.<br />

I am SO very grateful to my followers for reading and giving me feedback with your comments :)<br />
<br />
There are a couple of rules that go along with this award. The 1st is, I get to pass this award on to 8 of my favorite "stylish" blogs. And 2nd is, I have to share 8 things about myself that you may, or may not, know about me. And in the hopes that you will stop at each of these links and skip over the 8 boring facts about myself, I will start with the links...<br />
and the awards (in no particular order) go to...<br />

I "follow" roughly 85 blogs (yes, I counted, and yes, I read new posts everyday!) and it was really hard to single out just 8...I love them all! These are just SOME of my favorites and they ALL deserve this award, too!<br />
<br />
Ok, so I guess there's just one more order of business...<br />
<br />
1. I've been a hair stylist for almost 18 yrs now and I absolutely LOVE my job, although, it does cramp my quilty style occassionally.<br />
<br />
2. I'm "mom" to 3 beautiful, talented, extraordinary, funny, etc...children...who are not exactly "children" anymore. At 20, 18, and almost 15, they are almost grown.<br />
<br />
3. I am married to the "Love of my life" who has 4 kids of his own. I call them my "bonus" kids.<br />
<br />
4. I have NEVER won a giveaway in blogland. And I've entered A LOT. <br />
<br />
5. I have an addictive personality (self-diagnosed, of course). But because of this awareness, I have chosen to make my addictions of the sewing-kind. Also, puzzles of just about any kind, but mostly numbers. I love math and I suspect that's why quilting is SEW appealing to me...lots of math in quilting :)<br />
<br />
6. My very 1st job was at McDonald's. Which I am oddly kinda proud of...not even I know why. I encouraged each of my kids to apply there when they were old enough, but none would :(<br />
<br />
7. Both my girls are also hair stylists. The oldest has had her license for 2 years now and the younger will test for her license in May.<br />
<br />
8. I can solve a Rubik's cube. I keep one on my station at work and will occassionally ask someone to "mess it up" for me. I love love LOVE coming into work and finding it "messed up". And I cannot leave work until it's "fixed".<br />
<br />
So there you have it. Be sure to check out the links above and to those of you who have wandered over from <a href="http://tulip-patch.blogspot.com/">The Tulip Patch</a>, WELCOME! I would love to get to know ALL of you so leave me a comment, click on "follow" and if you have a blog, let me know so I can follow you, too...there's always room for more on my reading list ;)DD Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01331864126233676716noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8890641857899045780.post-58980175636741673022011-01-17T23:18:00.003-06:002011-01-18T12:09:35.673-06:00I survived......the holidays, that is! But just barely. Right after Christmas, we had company. Our sweet friends from Mexico, G and Cesia came to spend the New Year with us. They got here on friday and by monday, I had the flu. Boo.<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">BUT while I was aching and chilling, Cesia was working on her first quilt. She wanted to learn how and I wasn't going to let a little fever keep me from helping her. She made a baby rag quilt out of flannels and it really was the CUTEST thing and I've waited to blog about it because I didn't get a pic of it before they left on thursday morning. She promised she would take a pic and then left it at her parent's house on her way back to San Luis. So I'm still waiting on that pic...but I'm so proud of her, I just had to brag. So, Cesia, now it's a lot more than just me who wants to see that pic...just saying.</div>Before Christmas I was working on a commissioned quilt that I hope to show pics of soon. So, so far I guess this is the most boring blog post EVER.<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Oh, wait! Ok, so after the New Year and our company were gone, I decided to make a few handmade gifts for Christmas. Oh, I know Christmas is over, but who's gonna say "no" to a handmade gift? As most of you know, I'm a hair stylist in my "other" life. I found this <a href="http://www.crapivemade.com/2010/07/flat-iron-travel-pouch-tutorial.html">tute</a> by accident one day, and just KNEW I had to make these for my girls at work.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6VK47ptwCeGKUkyPGk9qE6Pac-oKLVSpcuCsQebC6b-3X-LJRnMnrSg9VJtGthYQ7NFSVgcNes-cIgRm72FwJFJ9Xs4xOBA7oXqpiBeV1rXAN7uHp6Lw9bFvyXYjGrbVbrJwtb3FX5Kg/s1600/P1071079.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" n4="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6VK47ptwCeGKUkyPGk9qE6Pac-oKLVSpcuCsQebC6b-3X-LJRnMnrSg9VJtGthYQ7NFSVgcNes-cIgRm72FwJFJ9Xs4xOBA7oXqpiBeV1rXAN7uHp6Lw9bFvyXYjGrbVbrJwtb3FX5Kg/s320/P1071079.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>It's a case for your flat iron! <br />

But I wasn't crazy about the design. then I found this cool <a href="http://www.crapivemade.com/2010/07/flat-iron-travel-pouch-tutorial.html">tutorial</a>. This one is different because...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQdmXzdv9_fY7nCPSfIt9mma848i0J1hCR6QW19RVGbe-U7cbCMv0AnMFxJpU6pTuKQpNk1RJvgDLDRlbzTxiCZQTgwxk2yYjKPfgRayQwxEbnCK5LO9BB_obDLaFKhcJqrdUNRKOAnL4/s1600/P1171084.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" n4="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQdmXzdv9_fY7nCPSfIt9mma848i0J1hCR6QW19RVGbe-U7cbCMv0AnMFxJpU6pTuKQpNk1RJvgDLDRlbzTxiCZQTgwxk2yYjKPfgRayQwxEbnCK5LO9BB_obDLaFKhcJqrdUNRKOAnL4/s320/P1171084.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>...it has a flap that holds your cord, nice and secure. Now I can pick it up anyway I want and my precious (and very expensive) CHI doesn't fall out. Genius!<br />
I did change it slightly, though. I wanted the seam that is made by the pocket to land in the middle of the case, so I shortened the width of the pocket by a 1/2 in. I also did not want to mess with trying to line up bias tape on the front AND back and just "hoping" that I'm catching both. So I made my own bias binding and sewed it on the same way I would machine sew a binding on a quilt. If the stitches showing on the inside of the case would bother you, you could just hand-stitch the binding down to the other side. I also went ahead and quilted the body of each case. It doesn't seem right to put batting inside an item (insulated or not) and then NOT quilt it.<br />
<br />
I <em>almost </em>finished a Christmas gift for a very dear friend...didn't quite get it quilted, but here's the top...<br />
<br />

I'll post finished pics later...you know, when it's finished. <br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">And just a little side-note...I've been wondering lately...How do you suppose God was able to create the whole world and everything in it, without making a huge mess? My sewing room is a disaster area!</div>DD Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01331864126233676716noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8890641857899045780.post-82073818641186792662010-12-08T11:10:00.002-06:002010-12-08T12:25:47.441-06:00A new quilter in the family...So, last week the guild had our annual Christmas party. I invited my daughter to come with me...she didn't really want to come until I told her there would be food :) We played a game called Fat Quarter Frenzy. Each person brought 3 FQ's to play with. One by one, FQ's were thrown into the center of the table (the pot). At the end of the game, whoever still had a FQ in their hands got to keep the whole pot. So guess who won the whole pot? That's right.<br />
<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5548176918192715330" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM7HHENdB3XBA25YO_ApANWUeIKLomWjfR31tyJtGS4xGH6I_QyP3wjzTKFT2F4I3Wi-mVZOAmePy1hPeRbiWiPRMbiI_EjUmL4bPHNbFOG2BOPVua1o3SIiwAnGaafGqV0YC-9iucaGs/s320/Aimee.jpg" style="cursor: hand; display: block; height: 320px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 191px;" />She won 21 fat quarters. Of course, my friends were all asking her what she might make with all this new treasure. As of 2 hours earlier, she had no intention of ever going to a guild meeting and now she was the proud owner of a whole lot of fabric.<br />
<br />
So on the way home...with no prompting from me...she announces that it might be cool to make a quilt. I know, RIGHT?!<br />
<br />
When we searched for quilt patterns (I'm thinking beginner friendly), she really fell in love with the dresden plate. She wasn't totally convinced until I told her that it might be kind of advanced and that I haven't even tried to make one yet. Well, that did it. Determined to make a dresden quilt, I told her we really need to practice one first...<br />

I know I should get over this, but I'm not sure how. I can make one of these bears in just a day or two. A quick easy project that actually seems to get more oohs and ahhs than the quilts. I've thought about just making the bears, if I didn't enjoy quilting so much :) So baby Jude is getting a little something extra to go with his quilt.<br />
This is my 2nd finish for this week. Wow. When I look at it that way...<br />
Cool.<br />

This baby quilt is for a sweet family at my church who had a baby back in August. I know, I know...another one that's 3 months late! I have joked with his mom that my goal was to get it done before he went off to college...mission accomplished! The family is moving to Asia, so my real deadline was before they leave. This is also the quilt that I was <em>thinking </em>about posting a tutorial for. It's really just a combination of a bunch of tutorials that I have found helpful throughout the www. So I haven't decided if the www NEEDS another tute out there. To be continued...<br />
<br />
Hopefully not the ONLY thing I finish, but most likely. We have a very busy week ahead...annual Christmas party tonight for the <a href="http://www.trailsendquilters.com/">guild,</a> work wednesday-saturday (I constantly have to remind myself that I DO have a regular job), Ladies Christmas Tea at my <a href="http://www.friendshipowasso.com/">church</a> AND my 5th anniversary with my hubby on friday and celebrating that anniversary on saturday. So for those of you who just KNOW you should be getting a quilt from me any day now...just KNOW that I AM working on it! Not sure if I'm gonna make all those Christmas deadlines, but I haven't given up yet!DD Lindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01331864126233676716noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8890641857899045780.post-28559764303139044572010-11-27T10:59:00.000-06:002010-11-27T10:59:58.281-06:00Sewing Challenge<a href="http://sewingchallenges.blogspot.com/"><img alt="" height="350" id="Image2_img" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXQ1txgc6wtrW-_JpKwlw6OAgvsvzNdxns6cYtDbp7ZDzYTTYmCrToX247t6S0uF-HvFcg6SX5YXvfTRHiIOzHl8uGRlSIq2hMGKyKfrm_y-_hgNCk0AQVAZBqhY4W1rr5IJtwOsyrYUI/s660/clipartimage.gif" width="350" /></a><br />

I didn't give an explanation of it in my last post, so here it is...<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">We had an auction planned for Sunday Nov. 21st at church to benefit our <a href="http://awana.org/">Awana</a> program. I usually just donate a haircut to this auction each year, but this is the first year that my husband and I are "Commanders" of this ministry. When someone mentioned how cool it would be if I could donate a quilt for the auction, I thought, "that's a GREAT idea!" Why not? I have made a <a href="http://sewmuchbeauty.blogspot.com/search/label/circle%20around">couple of quilts</a> using this pattern and knew how easy and fast it comes together. And how popular those quilts turned out to be, so why not? I knew I wanted to just make a lap sized quilt and planned to make the top on tuesday and quilt and bind it on wednesday (my weekend)...plenty of time before the auction on sunday, right? With this pattern, I like to wash it before giving it, so...</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUllQnMJiLBWkZd8b2w0YUPyebO4F9iipGwkYXkxS_9yj0m54b3U4k0kHljRSe2LpfqXbOL5KcbiQq6Iy64WsDvRKdHNsR1nSwUVkExWsbIxO8wtR61uzJFceLaMwi2PFY4Qr5psXFX48/s1600/PB221086.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" ox="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUllQnMJiLBWkZd8b2w0YUPyebO4F9iipGwkYXkxS_9yj0m54b3U4k0kHljRSe2LpfqXbOL5KcbiQq6Iy64WsDvRKdHNsR1nSwUVkExWsbIxO8wtR61uzJFceLaMwi2PFY4Qr5psXFX48/s320/PB221086.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">I love the crinkly, quilty softness of the raw edges on all those circles. But it is easier to navigate those curves with a slightly longer stitch AND as I said before, I have made this pattern before...twice. I felt safe washing it. After the initial shock and devastation subsided a little, knowing the auction was only 3 days away, and I would be working all 3 of those days, I needed to figure out what to do. Try to repair this one? Give up the idea of an auction quilt all together? Or start over? I went through some of my favorite quilting blogs looking for inspiration (and comfort). I found <a href="http://www.cluckclucksew.com/2009/01/orange-quilt-dimensions.html">this tutorial</a> at <a href="http://www.cluckclucksew.com/">Cluck Cluck Sew</a>. It was one of those "someday" quilts. I decided "someday" was today...well, tomorrow. It was 1:00 am and I had to work the next day, so I decided to get some sleep and start fresh on thursday...ok, it was already thursday, but I needed sleep.<br />
Morning came WAY too early. I woke up at 4:50 am. Unable to will myself back to sleep, I got up and started making new blocks. By 8am, I had 22 out of 30 blocks completed. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIr-scnD2EXhnegk3RRSlmYBV6E-7WD6dhXN7pX5ISzHJZ8L3BvklDs0_w77b7X11702N0BVhQLWpTaCpBhxDHa_v5ojpyIDV9g7nLlvITCmODimtFiH0Jb4RUQrSBcoUZHnv1k-9XMh8/s1600/IMAG0111.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" ox="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIr-scnD2EXhnegk3RRSlmYBV6E-7WD6dhXN7pX5ISzHJZ8L3BvklDs0_w77b7X11702N0BVhQLWpTaCpBhxDHa_v5ojpyIDV9g7nLlvITCmODimtFiH0Jb4RUQrSBcoUZHnv1k-9XMh8/s320/IMAG0111.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>I had run out of the Kona white and knew a trip to the fabric store would be my lunch break. I got home about 4:30 and went back to work. By bedtime, I had it loaded on <a href="http://www.flynnquilt.com/multiframe/description/">the frame</a> and knew sleep would not be a problem this time.<br />

I don't know where she finds quotes for her posts, but she's had some GREAT ones. This quote spoke to me because I have worked on this baby quilt for 3 months now. (Found the pattern <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2010/06/itty-bitty-babies.html">here</a>). It shouldn't have taken me this long, but I had the hardest time with the quilting. I thought I wanted to use my Flynn frame and just stipple it, but the length of the quilt was too much for the 48" rods that come with the frame. I have been to every place in my little town that might possibly have pvc pipe and/or emt rods that I could use to do larger quilts with my frame, but was unsuccessful. The more time that went by, the more trouble I had finding the motivation I needed to finish. I finally finished it last week. I decided done is best. So when I read this quote, I could truly relate. I am feeling that peace, and it feels good. But I will not be posting any close-ups of the quilting on this one.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlkv8sjUkOujempSMR5lg0IVZ0HTNFAtfPWr63UsrgHN9wsnuKnj_t50PZ54w9PedzAK54jNEE7LMpnHWjE_HJ9cL_PDy7_8WD39CuRMKp3ToKuD7ixzsvlmPDTosL15-JTzxU2utNHcw/s1600/PB161065.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" px="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlkv8sjUkOujempSMR5lg0IVZ0HTNFAtfPWr63UsrgHN9wsnuKnj_t50PZ54w9PedzAK54jNEE7LMpnHWjE_HJ9cL_PDy7_8WD39CuRMKp3ToKuD7ixzsvlmPDTosL15-JTzxU2utNHcw/s320/PB161065.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">Since it took me so long, I figured I would throw in a little sorry-it-took-so-long gift, so baby Britton also got a teddy to go with his quilt. So I pieced this block right in the center of the back of his quilt. VERY cool. This is my 1st time to participate in something like this as I haven't been blogging OR quilting for very long. But it sounded like fun. Amy over at <a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/2010/10/29/bloggers-quilt-festival-fall-2010/">Amy's Creative Side</a> is hosting a Blogger's Quilt Festival. When you get a chance, you should definitely go check out the other entries...SO much inspiration!<br />

I made this for a very special friend who had actually inspired me to start quilting. Marian and I had talked many times about quilting and when her eyes got too bad for sewing, she very sweetly passed on all the books she had on crafting and quilting. When she was diagnosed with cancer in December of 2008, I decided it was time to try. I read everything I could...books, blogs, anything I could find on Google...finally, I heard about a quilting class being held at my local Hobby Lobby store. I went to my 1st class in March of 2009. We met once a week for that whole month, but by the 2nd week I already had my quilt top finished.<br />
<br />

I was determined to quilt it myself. Thought I was so clever finding "fusible" batting. After ripping out a few lines of stitches, I decided maybe for this 1st one, I should let a "professional" help me finish. It was worth the wait. I got it back about a month later and in May, I was able to give it to Marian. I thought it would be hard to say goodbye to that quilt, but she loved it so much, it was worth seeing the joy on her face.<br />

I miss my friend. My hope now is that maybe I can inspire someone who has just "thought" about quilting to actually give it a try...the way Marian inspired me :)<br />

I SO want to get this one finished! But I keep getting discouraged with the quilting. It was too long to mount on my Flynn frame so I decided to "keep it simple" and just follow the blue lines with some straight lines. Problem is, I'm using white thread. Basically, everytime I get to a brown block, it looks as though someone keeps bumping me while I'm sewing...ugh. Everytime the thought crosses my mind to just rip it all out and start over, I just can't DO it! I hate ripping and I have to keep telling myself, <em>done is best</em>. So I will push through.<br />
Also, I started a tutorial a few weeks ago and then realized I had way too many things to finish before Christmas. 2 twin-sized, 1 queen sized, and 1 lap-sized quilt. The tute quilt is going to be a baby gift for someone special, but I've had to put it aside for now. Here's a sneaky peeky anyway...<br />
